Techniques Used by Dr. Erin Shook

Chiropractic has a variety of techniques that can be used depending on your needs.  Each individual person responds uniquely to therapies; therefore, Dr. Shook will work with you to determine the most effective treatments to achieve your health goals.
Below are a few examples of chiropractic techniques utilized at Shook Family Chiropractic, LLC.
Thompson Drop Table

There are several different techniques that utilize a drop table including but not limited to Thompson, Toggle, Cox Flexion-Distraction, Chiropractic Biophysics, and so on.

The table is designed with separate sections that drop down when the chiropractor applies a quick thrust with specific vector.  These three forces work together for a specific and less forceful adjustment to joints of the spine and extremity.  Often these tables have an option to drop the midsection down to accommodate growing bellies throughout pregnancy.  This is a safe and typically very comfortable option for mothers-to-be.

Sacro Occipital Technique - SOT (No 'Crack' Technique)

Sacro Occipital Technique got it's name from the focus on the body's relationship between the sacrum (base of your spine) and occiput (base of skull).  SOT is a highly effective technique that goes beyond adjusting just the osseous (bone) articulations of the spine and extremities by also analyzing the dural and meningeal system.  The Dura is a tough connective tissue that surrounds the brain, spinal cord, and nerve roots.  This system helps protect the Central Nervous System (CNS) while providing nurishment through pumping Cerevbral Spine Fluid (CSF) from the cranium (brain) to the lumbar spine and back up in a continuous circulation.  This vital system is often disrupted by MusculoSkeletal dysfunction.  Hense the importance of restoring proper function to both the MusculoSkeletal system as well as the Dural-Meningeal system to provide adequate Neural function.

Activator Method (No 'Crack' Technique)

The Activator Method uses a hand held instrument to apply the chiropractic adjustment to specific areas of the spine and extremities to achieve more efficient biomechanical function of joints.  It is often considered one of the more gentle techniques as it does not involve any twisting, pulling, or pushing.  The patient simply lays prone (on his/her stomach) as the doctor analyzes muscle reactions to determine location, force, and direction of a particular adjustment.

Diversified

Diversified Chiropractic Technique is probably the technique that first comes to mind as it is demonstrated (often falsely) on television shows and movies.

Like many chiropractic and osteopathic manipulative techniques, Diversified is characterized by a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust.  The adjustment is specific in location, force, and line of drive to restore proper movement of the spine and other joint articulations.

Webster

Webster Technique is primarily used in the care of pregnant women to restore proper function of the pelvis and sacral articulations.  It is believed that sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor due to inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation.  Through the chiropractic adjustment and soft tissue manipulation, a more adequate neuro-biomechanical function of the body can be restored.  Thus allowing for proper baby alignment and proper uterine /pelvic function.  Effective, safe, and non-evasive technique to turn a breech baby to the vertex position and decrease constraints during labor.  Thus decreasing labor time and complications.

Soft Tissue Work via
Myofascial Release|ART(Active Release Therapy)|Muscle Work|PIR(Post Isometric Release)

A human joint articulaton is composed of bone, nerve, and soft tissue (fascia, ligaments, tendons, and muscle).  Soft tissue work is often warranted to achieve maximum benifits from the chiropractic adjustment AND to hold the chiropractic adjustment for a longer duration of time. Your body may need release of restricted soft tissue, stretching and/or stregnthening of cooresponding tissue.  This all can be achieved with a combination of myofacial release, active release therapy, reciprocal inhibition therapy, and rehab exercise.
